To most human males, the thought of your mother anywhere ...

To most human males, the thought of your mother anywhere near your sex life is probably horrifying. Not so for the bonobo, one of our closest primate relatives. A new study confirms that hanging out with mom boosts male bonobos’ chances of getting intimate with a fertile female.

The study found that when their mothers are around, low- to mid-ranking bonobo males get more opportunities to mate. Mothers facilitated sons’ presence in their social circle so they were able to interact with more females, and also chased away rival males who might try to break up their sons’ blooming relationships.

The mothers aren’t just busybodies, say the researchers. In fact, taking an active interest in their sons’ love lives helps mothers pass on their own genes.

“If they support their sons, they can have more grandkids,” study researcher Martin Surbeck, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany, told LiveScience.

Bonobo mama’s boys

As any newlywed can tell you, parental interest in offspring’s reproduction is common. Orcas are known to form strong mother-son bonds, and according to a study published in August in the journal Nature Communications, being born to a high-ranking mom gives male hyenas a reproductive boost later in life.

In primates, mothers have been shown to improve the survival of their daughters’ offspring. But mother-son bonds are harder to measure, because most primate males leave their mother’s side at puberty. Bonobos, a cousin to chimpanzees, are an exception. Bonobo communities are female-dominated, and males stick with their mothers in adulthood.

Researchers have long known that the status of bonobo males is linked to the status of their mothers, and field observations suggested that moms were taking an active role in facilitating their sons’ mating, said Surbeck. To figure out the maternal role, he and his colleagues used DNA information to tease out the relationships between the bonobos in their field area at Salonga National Park in the Congo. Then they observed the bonobos over a 10-month period, watching how often they fought, mated and became fertile.

Maternal matchmakers

They saw that while the primates split into different “parties” during the day, sons stuck with their mothers between 81 percent and 92 percent of the time. When moms weren’t around, the dominant male was responsible for about 41 percent of sexual encounters with fertile females. But when the mothers of low-to mid-ranking males were present, that proportion dropped to 25 percent. In other words, moms kept the dominant male from monopolizing the most fertile females, allowing their own sons to mate, too.

Sometimes, the moms interfered, chasing unrelated males away from females or backing up fights involving their sons. Other times, they stood guard while their sons mated, keeping competitors at bay.

But in large part, the mom’s role may be more like that of a matchmaker. Since females have lots of social status in bonobo communities, Surbeck said, a mother’s presence allows a son to play a more central role in the group. Being in the center of the social group means more interactions with females and more opportunities to mate.

Evolutionary cousins

The study, published this week in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, “confirms largely what we’ve known for a long time” about the importance of mothers in bonobo communities, said Jo Thompson, the director of the Lukuru Wildlife Research Project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Thompson, who researches bonobos but was not involved in the current study, said the research raises new questions about the influence of a mother’s social rank on her son’s success, as well about how other family members, like brothers, might influence mating. She also warned that while the current study showed low- and mid-ranking males got to mate more with fertile females when their moms were present, it didn’t investigate whether they actually had more offspring.

“This is a good solid study that continues to build on the knowledge we have, and leads to more questions,” Thompson said. “The next step is where we really get interesting.”

Studying bonobos is important for conservation reasons, as the animals are threatened by habitat loss and poaching, said University of California Los Angeles anthropologist Joan Silk, a primate researcher who was not involved in the study. But because humans share an evolutionary ancestor with bonobos, the studies may also give us hints about our own evolutionary background, Silk said.

“Seeing both chimpanzees and bonobos gives us an idea of the range of possibilities of our ancestors’” behavior and social structure, Silk said. “They help us imagine what early human ancestors might have been like.”

There is a wide variety of weight loss pills on the market. The best weight loss pills list depends on what you want from them. If hunger is your problem, you can use appetite suppressants to keep it in check. If you want to burn fat at a faster rate, you should be using fat burners, which will raise your metabolism. Another option is the use of medication that binds to fat, used to reduce the fat taken daily, because the body will not absorb it if these pills are taken.

Some of the best weight loss pills available are the appetite suppressants. They work by fooling your mind into thinking that you’re full, so you will not need to eat as much. Caralluma Burn and Hoodia are two examples of such medication, and they don’t have any side effects. A weight loss pill that boosts the metabolism is the Hydroxicut. As for fat blockers, Alli is the one product that has the seal of approval from FDA.

          ...

With the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still under fire for failing to monitor the safety of a popular diabetes drug after it hit the market, researchers have released a new study revealing potentially dangerous risks of another widely prescribed medication: the weight-loss drug Meridia (sibutramine).
The report, published on Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), found that among nearly 10,000 overweight or obese patients, those who used Meridia had a 16% greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke over an average 3.4 years than patients taking a placebo. None of the events were fatal, but the finding was especially worrisome since the trial included only patients with a previous history of heart disease or diabetes, or both, which put them at high risk of a second event. Being overweight, they were also already at a higher risk of heart-related health problems. (Does the FDA have a drug problem?)
The study was commissioned by the European Union’s European Medical Agency, after initial studies of Meridia users, conducted prior to 2002, found that the drug raised blood pressure and pulse rates, both well known risk factors for heart disease. When Meridia, which suppresses appetite by regulating the brain chemicals serotonin and norepinephrine, was approved for use in the U.S. in 1997, the FDA included a warning about these risks on the label. (See TIME’s quick guide to the FDA.)
The new trial did not address the question of whether such heart risks would outweigh the weight-loss benefit for people without a history of heart disease. But Dr. Gregory Curfman, executive editor of the NEJM, who wrote an editorial accompanying the study with several colleagues, says the risks are significant for all patients, according to the evidence. “With sibutramine we have a risk-benefit picture that is not favorable,” he says. “In my opinion, it’s time for regulatory action on the drug.”
That may come after Sept. 15, when an FDA advisory committee is scheduled to meet to review the latest data on Meridia’s safety and to decide whether it should remain on the market. In January, the European Medical Agency recommended banning the medication from its member nations, based on preliminary results from the current trial. The agency’s experts noted that the weight loss seen among Meridia users – about 9 lb. over the course of the study – did not justify the potential health risks associated with the drug. And given the patients’ heightened risk of heart problems, the 9-lb. loss was clearly not sufficient to reduce the risk of any weight-related health issues. (See a study on how exercise can counteract obesity genes.)
The study’s authors disagree with that interpretation, however, noting that the elevated risks were limited to those with a history of heart disease. Among patients with diabetes but no history of heart attack or stroke, the authors say, there was no increase in heart problems compared with the control group. In fact, in additional data gathered since the paper was submitted, they say there is evidence that this group of Meridia takers actually lowered their risk of heart events. “What I am saying is that we have got to have some perspective,” says lead author Dr. Philip James of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. “I am saying we should not give this drug to people with a history of heart attack or stroke. But the best evidence we have at the moment is that among people who followed the prescription recommendations, not only do they not appear to have any greater risk of heart events, but they seem to have substantial benefit as well.”
That perspective will likely be the subject of intense debate among the FDA’s advisory committee members. “Nobody got better, and some people got worse, and the amount of weight loss wasn’t that much,” says Curfman. “With that profile, we have a lot of difficulty seeing what the argument would be for keeping the drug on the market.” (Comment on this story.)
Dr. Steve Nissen, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation who has been a vocal critic of recent FDA handling of drug safety concerns, agrees. “We’ve got a drug here that shows little benefit – a few pounds of weight loss – and we trade that for a 28% increased risk of heart attack and 36% increased risk of stroke. For a modest amount of weight loss, what are the health outcome benefits?”
That’s the question that the FDA will have to answer once again. Commissioner Margaret Hamburg is still weighing similar evidence regarding the diabetes drug Avandia, or rosiglitazone. An advisory committee recommended in July that the drug remain on the market with restrictions on its use, despite strong evidence that users were at increased risk of heart events. Experts in favor of keeping Avandia available to consumers argued that diabetes patients had few other options for controlling blood sugar, and that the evidence was not conclusive about Avandia’s harms. Hamburg has yet to decide whether to follow the committee’s advice or pull the medication from the market. She may have another tough decision on her hands with Meridia.
5 Fat Burning Tips to Get You Started
1) No liquid ...

5 Fat Burning Tips to Get You Started

1) No liquid calories (with the exception of a post-workout drink).

Get rid of all the juices, the sodas, and the sports drinks. Liquid sugar is the last thing you need when you are trying to lose fat.

You must also limit your alcohol intake – especially if you are adding mix to drinks…that is a double calorie bomb! A single “Jack and Coke” is over 200 calories (100 calories from booze and 100 calories from mix).

2) No fast food.

Do not eat at fast food restaurants. Even if you choose what you think is healthy, remember this:

Fast food restaurants are all about profit.

And in order to profit while giving you cheap, quick, and easy to prepare foods, the quality of the food ingredients will be poor especially the protein.

Now you might have read that you can still make healthy choices at fast food restaurants. But you know what, that’s just politically-correct opinion. If it’s fast food, it’s poor food.

Walking into a burger joint and grabbing a chicken breast on a white bread bun with a piece of old lettuce and a half-green, half-pink tomato is “barely” healthy eating.

The politically-incorrect truth is that it’s going to take time and effort to eat properly. You will have to plan, shop, and prepare healthy meals. You will have to spend time cleaning, cutting, and
cooking your food. That’s the truth.

But believe me, it will taste so much better than fast food, and healthy eating will make you more alert. Eating fast food will make you feel terrible, and will make you want to have an afternoon nap at your desk.

Make one small improvement to your nutrition everyday for the rest of your life.

3) Eat more fruits and vegetables.

If you are eating 2 servings per day, then go up to 4 servings per day by the end of the week. And even if you think you are doing great by having 5 servings per day, you still need to double that (take 2-3 weeks to work your way up to 10 servings per day).

Stick with fiber-rich fruits and vegetables – organic if possible.

4) Eat 1oz of almonds or walnuts per day (1/2 oz in the AM, and the other half in the afternoon).

Most nuts are roasted in oils (possible source of trans fats), so stick to natural or dry-roasted nuts.

Don’t panic…this small amount of nuts won’t make you fat, but will fill you up and help you lose weight.

5) Be consistent with your workouts.

And make sure the workouts are efficient and effective. To make it easy for you to follow, stick with the Turbulence Training fat burning workout system.

It doesn’t matter if you train in the morning before or after breakfast, or at night before or after dinner, or at 1pm on days when the moon is in line with Saturn…don’t worry about the details, just train consistently.

6) BONUS TIP: Go for a walk after lunch or dinner (or anytime you eat a big meal). Research shows this will help you control your cholesterol and triglycerides, plus any movement is better than sitting around watching the TV and snacking.

There is much more advise & tips with turbulence training.

HONG KONG – A leading virus expert urged health authorities around the world Sunday to stay vigilant even though the recent swine flu pandemic was less deadly than expected, warning that bird flu could spark the next global outbreak.
A World Health Organization official also defended the U.N.’s health body against accusations that it wasted governments’ money and enriched pharmaceutical companies with its strong warnings during the swine flu outbreak’s early days last year.
WHO declared the swine flu pandemic over last month. The latest death toll is just over 18,600 — far below the millions that were once predicted. The head of the global health body has credited good preparation and luck, since the H1N1 swine flu virus didn’t mutate as some had feared.
But speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an influenza conference in Hong Kong, researcher Robert Webster warned against complacency.
“We may think we can relax and influenza is no longer a problem. I want to assure you that that is not the case,” said Webster, chairman of the virology and molecular biology department at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
Webster predicted that the next pandemic could be sparked by a virus that spreads from water fowl to pigs and then onto humans — such as the H5N1 strain of bird flu, which has killed 300 people over the past seven years. He noted that after several years of decline, the number of bird flu cases in humans increased in 2009, lifted by an uptick of cases in Egypt.
“H5N1 can kill 61 percent of humans infected, but it doesn’t know how to spread from human to human. But don’t trust it because it could acquire that capacity. So we must stay vigilant,” he said.
Sylvie Briand, head of WHO’s global influenza program, said its surveillance has shown that the bird flu strain isn’t capable now of jumping between humans except in rare cases of close personal contact, but echoing Webster, warned: “These are viruses that are evolving. They are changing all the time.”
Both experts said it was difficult to predict when — or if — bird flu might set off a new pandemic.
“We don’t understand enough about the virus to make predictions,” Webster said.
University of Hong Kong microbiologist Malik Peiris said scientists are closely monitoring mutations by influenza viruses — including bird flu viruses — but it’s hard to determine which mutations are most likely to spread among humans.
Briand also defended WHO against accusations that it hyped the swine flu pandemic, saying it was acting with limited information when the virus first surfaced and adjusted its response when it became clear the outbreak wasn’t as serious as expected.
WHO received at least 0 million from member states to deal with the outbreak, some of which was invested in immunization programs long after the virus strain was known to provoke only mild illness in most of those infected. Governments spent many times that amount buying vaccines and antiviral medicines that are now being junked.
European legislators have repeatedly accused WHO of overstating the danger of swine flu and playing into the hands of the pharmaceutical industry, which has earned millions from the outbreak since it began in April 2009.
“We prepared for the worst and hoped for the best. And as the information became available, there was adaptation of the plan and adaptation of the recommendations in order to really tailor the response to the reality,” Briand said. “But it took some time.”

(Health.com) — All those late nights spent trolling Facebook, texting friends, and cramming for tests may be taking a toll on teenagers’ diets, a new study suggests.

Teens who average fewer than eight hours of sleep on weeknights tend to eat more fatty foods and high-calorie snacks than their better-rested peers, according to the study, which was published in the journal Sleep.

These unhealthy eating patterns can build up over time, and can lead to entrenched bad habits and weight gain, says Susan Redline, M.D., the senior author of the study and a professor of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School, in Boston.

Research “clearly has shown [that] individuals getting insufficient amounts of sleep are more likely to be obese and gain weight over time,” Redline says. “Among adolescents, the sleep-deprived are much more likely to consume more calories and to eat diets much richer in fats and high-density foods.”

Health.com: The 50 fattiest foods in the states

The study didn’t show that sleep patterns caused teens to become overweight, but Redline and her colleagues did find that the 18 percent of teens in the study who were obese were less likely to get eight hours of sleep than the teens of average weight.

It’s not clear why sleeping less may send teens to the fridge more often. One explanation involves the hormones leptin and ghrelin, which regulate appetite.

Not getting enough sleep has been shown to reduce the production of these hormones, which can make a person feel hungrier and fuel cravings for high-calorie snacks.

Social and cultural factors could also play a role, says Kristen Knutson, Ph.D., an assistant professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Chicago.

Although Redline and her colleagues took age, race, and parental education into account in their analysis, parenting style and other hard-to-identify factors could have influenced the data.

Health.com: 7 bedtime treats under 75 calories

“If there’s no chips in the house, [teenagers] are not going to choose that to eat,” says Knutson, who was not involved in the current study but has researched the health effects of short sleep.

It may also be that spending more time awake simply provides more opportunities to snack, Redline says.

The study included 240 teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 who were part of a larger study on sleep habits and health. The researchers measured the teens’ sleep duration using wrist monitors, and on two separate occasions asked them to list the foods they’d eaten in the previous 24 hours.

The teens averaged about 7.5 hours of sleep each weeknight — well shy of the nine hours the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends for this age group. Only about one-third of the teens slept for eight hours or more.

Health.com: 8 things that are keeping you awake at night

Compared with their better-rested peers, sleep-deprived teens got about 2 percent more of their daily calories from fat and 3 percent fewer calories from carbohydrates, the study found. And the teens who slept less than eight hours were more likely to get their calories from snacks — especially the girls.

“This study goes out into the real world and finds that short sleep is…associated with dietary choices and increased appetite,” Knutson says.

Even though snacking can be a part of a healthy diet, eating at times of day that are misaligned with the body’s clock can alter metabolism and make a person more likely to gain weight, according to Redline. More of the sleep-deprived teens consumed a significant amount of calories between the hours of 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., she notes.

Health.com: 25 diet-busting foods you should never eat

“Teens tend to be what we call ‘phase-delayed,’ so their body’s natural tendency is to push them towards later bedtimes,” says Redline. “Then if school is pushing them to wake up early, they’re going to be sleep-deprived, and perhaps eating in the very early hours when their metabolic system isn’t really geared up to deal with that many calories.”

The study findings should serve as a reminder to teens and parents alike that sleep — not just diet and exercise — is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, Knutson says.

“We need to let parents know that bedtime is important for the health of their kids,” she says.

Muscle Building Diets – Should You Include Fat Burning Supplements ...

Muscle Building Diets – Should You Include Fat Burning Supplements and Do They Really Work?

In the over-hyped world of marketing, one of the largest sectors is weight loss – including the fat burning weight loss necessary for bodybuilders. There are various pills, powders, potions and supplements available, but would any of them actually work as part of muscle building diets?

The short answer is no!

The weight loss sector is a billion dollar industry. Manufacturers and their marketing partners will put anything on the labels and eye-catching packaging, in an attempt to get you to part with your hard earned cash in exchange for their products.

As a natural bodybuilder, your aim will be to organise your training regime and muscle building diets wisely. Eating the correct foods at the right times, and arranging your work-out schedule to its best effect will eliminate the need for any supplements, and burn fat off naturally.

Those that travel down the supplement road run the risk of negative side effects, mostly mild but some can be quite serious. The marketing moguls who sell bodybuilding supplements hardly ever put information on their packaging regarding side-effects, and if they do it is in microscopic print which is almost invisible to the naked eye.

I have compiled a list of some side-effects below. These are not based on laboratory tests, but they are actual reported cases by genuine people. The supplements in question are; Amino acids, Creatine, Glutamine, Prohormones and Protein supplements.

Some of the side-effects that may be suffered are; Acne – Headaches – Nausea – Insomnia – Vomiting – Diarrhea – Hypertension – Muscle cramps – Hair loss – Diabetes- Testicular shrinkage and breast growth in men – Appearance of masculinity in women.

The information is there, make your own choice, if you want my advice – keep it natural.

          ...

NEW YORK – Editors of a top medical journal call Meridia “another flawed diet pill” and question whether it should stay on the market as a study shows it raises the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with heart problems.
The strongly worded editorial comes two weeks before government advisers review the prescription drug, which has already been pulled in Europe. In January, U.S. drug regulators strengthened existing warnings that the appetite suppressant should not be used by those with a history of heart trouble.
In Thursday’s issue, the editors of the New England Journal of Medicine noted that the latest study showed weight loss with Meridia was minimal, it didn’t improve cardiovascular health, and those with heart disease fared worse.
“It is difficult to discern a credible rationale for keeping this medication on the market,” they wrote.
The editorial — with a headline calling the drug “another flawed diet pill” — was published along with the findings of the study conducted in Europe, Latin America and Australia.
The research involved about 10,700 overweight or obese people 55 or older who had heart disease, diabetes or both and were treated for about 3 1/2 years.
Overall, 11.4 percent of those on the diet pill had a heart attack, stroke or died of a heart-related cause, compared to 10 percent of those taking a dummy pill. The difference was mostly in heart attack and stroke; there was no difference in deaths between the groups.
A person taking Meridia had a 1-in-70 chance of suffering a heart attack or stroke, or a 1-in-52 chance if they had pre-existing heart problems, the editors wrote.
There was no increased risk in the group with diabetes but no heart problems, the researchers found.
Meridia also led to only modest weight loss: about 10 pounds over 12 months for someone weighing an average of 211 pounds.
The research, requested by European drug regulators, was funded by Meridia maker Abbott Laboratories, and company employees were among the researchers. After getting preliminary results, the European Medicines Agency recommended in January that the diet pill no longer be sold in Europe and Abbot suspended sales. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sought the stronger label warnings.
Abbott spokesman Scott Davies said the appropriate candidate for Meridia is someone who’s obese with no history of heart disease who can’t lose weight with diet and exercise. He noted that most of the study’s participants wouldn’t be eligible to take it under its current label.
“We believe this is an important option for patients and physicians to treat a serious condition for which there are few treatments currently available,” he said.
Meridia was approved in the U.S. in 1997 — the same year the popular fen-phen drug combo was linked to heart valve problems and pulled from the market. Meridia use in the U.S. has been steadily declining in recent years, according to prescription data firm IMS Health. About 283,000 prescriptions for it were filled last year, just over half the number of prescriptions in 2005.
Davies said Abbot doesn’t actively promote Meridia in the U.S. and he termed sales modest. The company expects global sales this year to be less than 0 million, including less than milllion in the U.S., he said.
The drug, also known as sibutramine, is sold under a variety of names around the world.
An FDA advisory panel will review the study at a Sept. 15 meeting, while the next day it will consider approval of a new weight-loss drug, lorcaserin. Drugmakers have struggled to come up with a pill that doesn’t have risky side effects. The panel voted against another experimental diet drug in July because of its side effects.
Wright County Egg has voluntarily recalled 380 million eggs, some laid as long ago as May 17. The vast majority have already been consumed. The eggs went to distribution companies in 17 states, mostly west of the Mississippi River, but were then sold nationwide.

State and local health departments, assisted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are studying cases of salmonella illness in Arizona, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas, according to the FDA. Officials at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, however, said they know of no cases appearing to be linked to the Iowa eggs.

While the sale of fresh eggs from Wright County Egg is stopped for the moment, the number of illnesses is expected to rise in the next few weeks as previous cases come to the attention of the health authorities and some new infections occur.

Tests of the company’s hen houses and eggs, which are produced at five farms in the Central Iowa towns of Galt and Clarion, are not yet complete, an official from the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.

Eggs can become infected by the salmonella bacterium by being laid by infected hens, or by contamination during storage or packaging.

The outbreak occurred just as new federal regulations designed to prevent salmonella contamination of eggs took effect on July 9.

The rules, under development since 2004, require egg farms of a certain size to test for “environmental contamination” by salmonella bacteria, which is carried in the feces of many species; limit access to chicken houses; control rodents, which can contaminate chicken feed with feces; clean and disinfect poultry houses under certain circumstances; and hold and transport eggs at a cool temperature.

Many states, as well as egg-producer associations, have voluntary “egg quality assurance” programs with guidelines similar to those that are now mandatory. A spokeswoman for Wright County Egg, Hinda Mitchell, said the company has voluntarily followed the new rules “for several years.”

In a telephone briefing, however, Sherri McGarry of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition told reporters: “We do believe that the outbreak could have been prevented.”

Maryland had 809 confirmed cases of salmonella infection last year, said David Blythe, Maryland’s state epidemiologist. About one-third are caused by Salmonella enteritidis (SE), the species sometimes found in raw eggs. “At this point, we do not have any SE cases in Maryland definitively linked to recalled eggs, but we’ll keep looking,” Blythe said.

The bacterium causes nausea, vomiting and fever. In healthy people, it rarely causes severe illness. In people with a weak immune system — and especially in AIDS patients — salmonella can cause life-threatening bloodstream, blood vessel or brain infections. In 2004, there were about 1.4 million salmonella infections from all causes (not just food consumption), with 14,264 hospitalizations and 427 deaths.
